Indo Pak should reunite-First step to end war-Dr Amarjit Tanda*
Certain nations or ethnic groups were at some point in history split up and later reunited again.China – So many times.Turkey – broke after Mongols invaded. Reunited after Ottomans. Byzantine Empire – broke into Epirus, Morea, and Nicaea after 1204, then was reunited under Michael VIII.
Iran – broke and reformed half a dozen times, the most recent when the Qajars defeated the Zands and Afsharids, among others.
Egypt – The dynasties between roughly the mid 20s and early 30s and some others were actually ruling separate kingdoms until they reunified.
Macedon… sort of – Broke into 17 kingdoms, which consolidated into three, the Seleucids being the largest.
Korea – had its own three Kingdoms period
Japan – broke into fiefdoms during the Sengoku Jidai before unifying again
Germany – many times. The HRE disintegrated after conflicts with the Pope and civil war, but was brought back together as the German Empire. Germany broke up but reunited after the Cold War.
Yugoslavia – broke into total ethnic massacre, indiscriminate killing, and puppet states during WW2. The Yugoslav people hated the ethnic feuds and German occupation so much that their multi-ethnic Partisan army managed to defeat the Germans, Croats, Serbian chetniks, and Slovenian home guard in succession and reunite the country.
Frankish Empire – In the early reign of Charles Martel, the do-nothing Kings of the Merivingian dynasty had caused the Franks to split into three areas before Charles reunited them.
So India Pakistan should reunite asap to end war.The wounds of partition will no longer remain. No more cursing of history and each other. No more ‘Muslims should be thrown away to Pakistan’ kind of hate speeches.
End of the KASHMIR ISSUE wl there. A united cricket team. A team with Indian batsmen and Pakistani pacers will be simply invincible.Beautiful Pakistani actresses and talented Pakistani singers would be a part of Bollywood. Reunion of families.
The partition of the country led to the partition of many families too. Indo-Pak reunion will unite all such disintegrated families as well.
This unification is possible, but powers on both sides who do not want this unification to take place. Even though the subcontinent was one country under the British, after independence the countries have gone separate ways.
First problem is that all people will not accept this transition of ideology. Even though the new and more educated generation on both sides want peace and harmony, there is a large group of conservatives, nationalists and religious extremists in both countries who will oppose this idea, and will influence millions of others to do so. They will support the two nation theory. Again, if the said unification ever happened, these xenophobes will not allow a full scale cultural integration. This could lead to a civil war and/or political instability.
Secondly, both the governments will be reluctant to lose their current status in their countries’ politics. If the said unification ever happened, the politicians on Indian side will not get support from former Pakistanis and the other way round. They would not like half the country not supporting them. Also, since there have been four wars between the countries in just half a century, this makes reunification seem a little difficult.
Third problem is that the level of development in both countries is very different. Pakistan’s economy (sadly) is in trouble and it has more infrastructural problems than India. Also, there is a problem of terrorism on the Afghan-Pakistan border. The new nation will have to deal with this new problem, when there already is a lot of insurgency in India. Also, merging a politically stable democracy with a country that is struggling to keep alive its democratic system and frequently comes under control of tyrants, has its own challenges.
Fourth problem is that after this unification, there would be a lot of challenges like amendments to the constitution, infrastructural development plans focused in the Pakistan area.
If many countries can reunite why can’t we? A great treatment is given in Pak whenever our visitors go there. They never take money for meals saying you are our guests. You can see how Abhinandan was treated in their custody.
Above all reunification will be a big relief to both the countries and the people for a long and happy future.
